Organ Donation Awareness Week  (MKPO)

Organ Donation Promotion program started when Ministry of Health Malaysia launched the first Organ Donor card in 1999. Under the National Transplantation Committee, Ministry of Health, a committee named National Public Awareness Action Committee on Organ Donation was formed . Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Lee Lam Thye has been appointed to be the chairman since then . The committee is responsible to deliver the information, promote and conduct the awareness programs to raise up the public concern to organ donation.

In the Europe, organ donation awareness celebration organized by an Organ Donation Awareness Day Committee. The celebration was first held in Geneva in conjunction to the 12th Meeting of the European Council of Organ Transplant with the involvement of the Council of Europe and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Based on that, the National Public Awareness Action Committee on Organ Donation organized  a Malaysia 1st National Organ Donation Awareness Week celebration on 16th  – 24th October 2010.  The program was officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Health Malaysia in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.

The celebration gets a good support from the various agencies, NGOs, government and private sector, religious bodies, etc.

Among the highlighted activities during the celebration are the planting  a“Tree of Life” ( as a symbol of organ donation) and also a special program named “Bicara Hati”. Bicara Hati is the program where the donors’ family and the recipients are gathered to express their feelings, thankful and rememberence to the donors.

In relation to the National level of celebration, all sorts of NGOs, bodies and agencies also will be having and organizing their own awareness program whether in state, district  or community level.
